Continuing Sprite Design: Day 1

Over the next week, I’m going to focus a lot more on learning how to design sprites. This is a project that I will post updates on every day this week, including pictures to showcase my progress. My goal is to improve my drawing skills vastly over this week!
Mostly, the problems I’m having with designing sprites is that I keep getting distracted, and making them specifically for tests within GM. That’s how I ended up with this crappy looking sprite!

He only took me about 10 minutes to design, and you can tell! He doesn’t even have hands or a properly proportioned head. His only purpose was for me to figure out how to properly make a character sprite, and I learned that he’s way too tall for a game that features 32×32 square tiles. Anyway, that’s not the point of this post.

I think something that will help is if I design my sprites on paper first, then see if I can draw them in the computer. A Wacom Table would be SOOOO helpful with this, because using a mouse is just cumbersome. Perhaps that should be my next investment. But if I design most of my sprites on paper first, I should be able to figure out how to draw them digitally without too much trouble. At least, that’s what I hope!

This week should be interesting with learning how to draw. I’ll let you all know how it goes!
